Dr Manjinder Sandhu talks about the future of Angioplasty

Dr Manjinder Sindhu, from Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, India garnered huge appreciation and applaud on the first day of the C3 Conference, after giving a live demonstration of advanced angioplasty techniques.
The Complex Cardiovascular Catheter Therapeutics Conference commenced on Tuesday in Orlando. Covering areas like interventional cardiology, vascular surgery, interventional radiology and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, the conference is a four-day event.

Dr Manjinder Sindhu

A stent is a tiny, metal mesh tube that is inserted in the blocked artery during the angioplasty procedure. Stents were created to prevent the artery from collapsing after the blockage has been cleared. Conventionally, stents are of two types: bare metal stents and drug eluted stents. However, the latest technology includes the use of bio-absorbable stents.
A bio-absorbable stent is the one that could be absorbed by the body. Bio-absorbable stents have many benefits over the types of stents that were being used till now. They allow time for the artery wall to heal before being metabolized by the body and disappearing. These stents also prevent the growth of scar tissue within the stent – a problem sometimes posed by bare metal stents. In addition to these benefits, bio-absorbable stents hold out the promise of making long-term medical therapy to prevent blood clots forming inside the stent unnecessary.
The procedure rightly justified the theme of the conference – ‘Innovation: what to expect from the future technology’. Talking about the technology that was used in this demonstration, Dr Majinder Sandhu stated, “We have had large experience with the Absorb Scaffold (BVS) and have implemented close to 400 of them over the past two-and-a-half years. Currently, BVS is not available in North America and is slated to be launched in the US and Canada by the end of the year. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the newest technology and our expertise to the cardiologists in the US.”

Artemis Hospital offers free treatment to Hyderabad kid who bleeds from her eyes

Artemis Hospital Gurgaon : The curious case of Hyderabad three-year-old Ahana Afzal, has caught the attention of people from all over the country. The girl bleeds everyday despite no wounds on her body. Losing so much blood has left the girl exhausted and unable to carry on with daily functions of life. What started as a little blood oozing out of her nose due to pneumonia has turned into abnormal bleeding from the child’s eyes, mouth, ears and nose. The child used to attend school till two months ago, but was forced to stay at home later due to the severe turn her disease took.

The kid’s parents, Nazima Begum and Mohammed Afzal, find themselves helpless as they have failed to get any doctor to find the exact cause of their daughter’s condition, in spite of having shelled out a huge sum of money for her treatment. They have now resorted to crowd-funding through social media to seek financial help for their daughter.

According to Dr Shashidhar, ENT expert at Artemis Hospital Gurgaon, it is highly probable that Ahana might be suffering from rare medical conditions like haemolacria or haemotodrosis. With two similar successful cases, the expert medic is keen on taking up his third case.

one-of-a-kind medical emergency at Artemis Hospital

Eventually, the patient was wheeled into the emergency of Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon. Upon arrival at the hospital’s emergency room, he had to undergo a lifesaving procedure called tracheostomy for creating an artificial passage to breathe from the neck. A hole was surgically opened in the neck up to the trachea. However, the treatment was ineffective as the kebab was stuck below the artificial passage.

The routine ENT instruments were inadequate due to the large size and critical nature of the obstruction. Keeping the patient alive with minimum oxygen levels in the body proved to be a huge challenge for the surgeons and anaesthetist. They finally resorted to an out-of-the-box technique, using an abdominal laparoscopic grasper (used in gall bladder removal surgery) to remove the kebab from the windpipe. The unique technique turned out to be successful and effective as compared to the conventional method.

India’s youngest 23 weeks born premature baby survives at Artemis Hospital Gurgaon

Baby Taranum, described as #WonderBaby by the media was born at 23 weeks’ gestation in January 2017 at Artemis Hospital Gurgaon. Weighing barely 650 gms, she happens to be the most premature baby to survive in the country, without even a single blood transfusion. As per the doctors who nursed the child in the Neonate Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Artemis Hospital, the baby was born without any major complication.

Taranum was put on ventilator for 15-20 days due to severe breathing issues, for her lungs were not developed completely. At present, all her vital organs are in perfect condition. The baby was hospitalized for four months and discharged in good health at the end of April.

The chances of survival depend on the time for which a premature baby stays in the womb. The more the time, the better the chances of survival are. As a matter of fact, a premature baby has hopes of surviving only if born at a gestational age of 24 weeks. Even in this case, the survival chances lie between 50-80 per cent. This clearly makes the survival of a preterm infant born at 23 weeks nothing less than a miracle, made possible by Artemis Hospital Gurgaon.
